Beltane Fire Society – The Future?

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Happy Samhuinn everyone!

As we take a well deserved rest from another fantastic festival (one which even the weather came along to play at!) our thoughts begin to turn towards our next festivals and the coming year.

Next year will be our 25th Beltane Fire Festival, marking a quarter of a century of development and change of both the Society and the Festival – from small, but significant beginnings, to one of the largest fire performances in the world.

BFS has come a long way in those 25 years – we are now a charity with the recognition that affords, have become more financially stable, and have a good working relationship with the council and other local groups - while still maintaining our core principles, and remaining composed entirely of volunteers.

So what do we do now?

Traditionally we have a meeting every year – ‘The Big Blether’, in which we discuss our plans for the next festival. This year, we want to do something slightly different – and discuss our plans for the future of Beltane Fire Society as a whole.

Since taking over as Chair I’ve heard lots of discussions on a wide variety of topics. What direction should we be heading in? How should we interact with other community groups in Edinburgh, Scotland and around the world? Are our festivals perfect the way they are, or is there something missing, or something that needs changing? We are now a charity – and have charitable aims – are we achieving them? Should we maintain our focus on Beltane and Samhuinn, or should balance our efforts across the year? Are people still getting more out than they put in? Are we reaching our audience and the community with our work? Should we wind it all up, call it a day, and move on to something completely different?

There won’t be a formal agenda, but we’ll be looking at questions under broad categories:

  • Achieving our Charitable Aims – Education about the festivals, Community Outreach, etc.
  • Volunteer involvement and society ‘structure’
  • Our festivals – traditions, performances, rituals, directions and aims.
  • Plans for the 25th year of BFS and our 25th Beltane

Of course – discussion will centre around the areas you feel are most significant!

As a bonus, we now have the preliminary findings of the Queen Margaret University Audience survey from Beltane 2011 which will be presented and discussed – they make very interesting reading!

So the important bit – when and where:

Sunday 13th November – 3pm, St Margaret’s House (room to be confirmed)

Please do try and make a space in your diaries for this very important discussion. Please also forward on this message to anyone else you think might not have received it.

If you can’t make it, but have some thoughts on any of the broad areas listed above, then feel free to email me your thoughts, and I’ll add them at the meeting.

Hope to see you all there!

We are looking for an experienced Front of House Manager to organise and manage the Box Office for the Beltane Fire Festival 2011

We have approximately 10,000 people on Calton Hill and the Box Office sells over 2,000 tickets on the night.

The key responsibilities of the Front of House Manager are:

  • To manage the Box Office and Front of House area on the night
  • To liaise with the Producer and Production team to ensure we have the best facilities? To liaise with the Finance Office to set-up good financial practices in the Box Office, including ticket sales, payment of staff, ticket sales data and security of funds.

Beltane Big Ideas Meeting

Monday, December 6th, 2010

It’s that time again and we are organising a Big Ideas Meeting for Beltane Fire Festival 2011.

1 pm – Saturday 11th December – St Margaret’s House

(St. Margaret’s House, 151 London Road, Edinburgh, EH7 6AE).

It’s kind of difficult to be thinking about a spring festival when you are knee deep in snow but we need to start planning now if we want to incorporate any new ideas into the festival.

The purpose of this meeting is for blue sky thinking about the festival. This is the time and place to bring your ideas about big changes, revivals or new directions for an airing and to see how they fare.

Everything is up for discussion including ideas for:

  • Big structures
  • Big changes to the main story arc
  • Big changes with new or existing groups
  • Big changes regarding metaphor and imagery

As you all know one of the main strengths of the festival is that it remains connected to the people who take part and that it remains fresh and exciting. Obviously change is not compulsory and there is plenty of ontinuity but as a previous Producer observed:

“Living things are either growing or dying. The same is true for artistic expression – growth is change and change is good, it keeps Beltane robust and healthy.”

This meeting is open to all members of the Society; everyone is welcome and everyone’s opinion is welcome.

Beltane 2011 Producer Needed!

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Though it’s only the end of November and we still have the Winter Solstice and Imbolc to come, we need someone to step up now for the important role of producing Beltane 2011.

What does this role involve?

It involves dedicating several months of your life to organising one of the most unique and spectacular events in the world!

The key responsibilities of the Producer are as follows:

• To manage the event on the night
• To tame the event finances and administration
• To organise the event staff and subcontractors
• To negotiate with City of Edinburgh Council re licenses, lease of Calton Hill, road closures, public safety and clean-up
• To liaise with emergency services through City of Edinburgh Council’s EPOG (Event Planning & Operations Group) process
• To maintain good relations with local residents and businesses
• To keep the event on track by coordinating all the necessary meetings, rehearsals and walkthroughs.

Producing a Beltane Fire Society event is a challenging and thrilling experience, and you won’t be on your own; the Board of Directors and previous Producers will be on hand to offer help and advice.

If you are interested in this role, please send a short proposal covering one side of A4 answering each of the following areas:

• Your previous event management experience
• Your previous experience of the Beltane Fire Society or similar organisations
• Any specific ideas that you might have for the Beltane Fire Festival 2011
• Your previous experience of leading and inspiring volunteers.

Please note that this is a paid position and while we are very willing to be flexible about working arrangements we can only consider submissions from people who can make the Beltane Fire Festival their primary focus between the 15th January to the 16th May 2011.

If you are interested please contact chair@beltane.org for further details.

Please note that all submissions should be sent to chair@beltane.org by Friday 24th December 2010 at the very latest. The Board of Directors will be discussing the submissions at the end of December with interviews to be arranged in early January 2011.
