Folklorist Margaret Bennett discusses the meaning of Beltane. When Angus Farquhar had the idea of starting the Edinburgh Beltane Fire Festival in 1988, Margaret Bennett was the folklorist on hand. As part of the spectacle, sang with her son Martyn Bennett, the late lamented innovative techno-piper, who was also part of the creation of Edinburgh’s First Beltane Festival. Margaret has watched it develop over the years, and, at the invitation of the Edinburgh Beltane Society in 2007, she explained the significance of Beltane over the centuries.
