Facing winter calls for endurance, stoicism, willpower, patience, and acceptance – qualities often embodied by the Winter King. But who says only a king can reign over the winter season?  

Meet my Winter Queen, a symbol not just of the winter season, but also of Scotland’s profound connection to the North. Rather than drawing from a single historical or folklore figure, she channels the spirit of the diverse peoples from the North — from indigenous, to viking age, to contemporary — celebrating those accustomed to surviving and thriving in the coldest and harshest environments. Given the impact of climate change, which now often leaves our winters snowless, it’s easy to overlook that Scotland is the Arctic’s nearest neighbor, with Shetland lying closer to the Arctic Circle than to London.

I have a deep personal connection with the Arctic – through my PhD research, I spent 6 field seasons working in the Arctic Ocean studying impacts of climate change and human activities, witnessing first hand the receding glaciers and animals straying into unexpected latitudes. I want to explore and embrace Scotland’s connection to the North through the journey of my Winter Queen. 

Winter Queen is a warrior, but she will not survive alone – I call upon all winter-aligned groups to not merely witness, but join me in the battle between the seasons! Whether we join this battle by choice or being forced by the accelerating climate change, and who are we really fighting – our journey together will reveal, but I can promise you an epic adventure (possibly including some stage-fighting workshops!). In other words – I can’t wait to hear what groups will come to live this year and explore what interactions we might have. 

My court, The Winter’s Guard, will draw inspiration from Shetland folklore, featuring characters like wulvers, selkies, and Nuckelavee. This core group will be small but inclusive, welcoming community participation; more details will follow soon.

Having been a part of BFS since 2016, I have always felt more drawn to Samhuinn and Winter. This year the stars have aligned and I can’t be more grateful to have the opportunity to bring this joint concept co-created with Seraphina – the Summer Queen, to life.
