Acropalyptic

Acropalyptic explored and played with Acropolis 7s, the drum beat that starts the festival, the rhythm at the heart of Beltane. Participants ranged from experienced drummers to completely new members, with the personal and collective interpretations including:  animation; heavy metal and samba; body percussion; motorcycle helmets and screams into the void. Enjoy.

My first exposure to Beltane was in the 90s. Fire, ritual, dance and driving rhythms… instant love for a teenaged drummer. 90s musical styles and the hypnotic rhythms of Beltane have always been hand in hand in my mind. I hope it brings a bit of Beltane spirit to you this year.

One of the pleasanter things about lockdown has been the return of birdsong to city life. In a lockdown festival with a rewilding theme, maybe the birds would like to play a part.

The last few moments of hushed burbling quiet and the first few beats of Acropolis 7’s are the first liminal space most people experience on Beltane night.  Transitioning from a bunch of people on a hill awaiting *something* to a cacophony and chaos which sweeps people into the night and another world.

This is a take on the Acropolis 7s on guitar and bass, inspired by my Friday morning coffee and the memories of standing on the Acropolis for the first time.
