Our remarkable events couldn’t happen without our Stewards – they’re an essential presence. We’re currently looking for a contractor to organise and coordinate our stewarding arrangements.
Application Deadline: 22nd September 2021 at 17:00
Job title: Parade Safety Officer
Event: Initially Samhuinn Fire Event 2021, with possible extension to Beltane Fire Event 2022
Location: Edinburgh
Fee: £700
Hours: estimated 6-8 hours per week up to November 14th
Start date: September 22nd 2021
In the event of a performance cancellation as a result of the pandemic, the Parade Safety Officer will be paid for work undertaken up to the point of cancellation.
What does this role involve?
The role includes approximately 4-6 hours work per week with volunteers outdoors, as well as attending weekly Group Organiser meetings on Tuesday nights, online 7-9pm. You’ll be expected to recruit (with support) and train a steward team of around 30 individuals, as part of our broader volunteering community. The Parade Safety Officer will also attend event walkthroughs (17/10/21 and other dates TBC), as well as work with the Event Coordinator, other technical teams, Torchbearers and group organisers to ensure the Stewarding Plan is safe and practical.
In addition, when the Torchbearers (Torchies for short) do their live fire practices, they usually have Stewards present as part of their training. During these, the Torchies will learn to put out torch balls as a fire confidence thing. Fire safety training also happens during these sessions. There will be one or two of these sessions, two hours each, on a weekday evening when it’s dark. The Parade Safety Officer will arrange for Stewards to attend as usual.
Being the Parade Safety Co-ordinator is a challenging and thrilling experience, and you won’t be on your own; the Board of Trustees and the Event Coordinator will be on hand to offer help and advice as well as volunteer stewards who have prior experience of the festival.
Interviews expected to be held w/c 20th September. When applying please state if you are not available any day or evening that week.
If you are interested in this role please send your CV along with a short proposal covering one side of A4 answering each of the following areas
• Your previous experience of coordinating stewards at parades or similar events
• Your previous experience of the Beltane Fire Society or similar organisations
• Your previous experience of leading and inspiring volunteers
CV and cover letter to chair@beltane.org

More information about the role and the Beltane Fire Society (BFS) is available on our website. BFS is a charity organisation.
